Flexible Jobs for Seniors Who Want to Retire (But Not Really!) - Sterling Career Concepts

Flexible Jobs for Seniors Who Want to Retire (But Not Really!) Flexible Jobs for Seniors Who Want to Retire (But Not Really!) Photo by bruce mars from Pexels There are many reasons that seniors continue to work past the age of 65. While money is an obvious desire, avoiding boredom, loneliness, and mental decline are all also driving forces. If you find yourself looking for a new career to supplement your senior years, you are in luck. There are many flexible jobs for seniors that will allow you to continue to earn and learn without giving up the freedom of retirement.  Here are four to consider: 1. Customer service If you’re patient, articulate, and have a knack for making people feel at ease, a job in customer service might be just what you need. Many firms even offer remote working opportunities if you only want to take calls part-time and have a reliable internet connection, home office, and a quiet space. CNBC notes General Electric, Amazon, and Humana are just a few well-known companies that offer work-at-home positions for qualified employees. 2.  Accounting/tax preparation When you have experience in accounting, you can use your mathematical prowess as a tax preparer. As a retiree, you might enjoy seasonal work as a non-credentialed tax preparer, working for companies like HR Block or Jackson Hewitt. You won’t make as much money as a CPA, but there are very few barriers, and you do not have to have a license in most states. If you want to prepare taxes on your own without working for a company, you’ll need to obtain an Electronic Filing Identification Number from the IRS. One of the biggest benefits is that you are usually done by mid-April, leaving your summer open for travel and recreation. 3. Insurance sales Insurance is a product that everybody needs, but far too few people understand how much or why. If you have a background in sales, helping people get themselves set up with life insurance may be a financially lucrative option. You can work full-time or part-time, and you might just find that helping other people prepare for the future is more rewarding than the paycheck. Before you sign up as an agent, do your research. In the beginning, your clients will likely be friends and family, and you should get to know the various types of life insurance that can meet their needs. You also want to make sure that you are working for a company that offers the kind of environment and support you’ll need. According to the Lincoln Heritage reviews on Indeed, that might be a good company to help you get started. 4. Child care and early education There are a few obvious downsides to childcare. Exposure to germs is one, especially in the winter months. But despite the risk of the flu, working with children has many benefits for mature adults. Per HealthDay, older volunteers and teachers get to experience the “joy and exuberance that comes from being around kids.” Further, spending your days playing with giggling little ones can make you feel young, needed, and energetic. A few options here are to work for a private daycare, a Mother’s Day Out program, or the aftercare at your local elementary school. To help you avoid colds and the flu, you’ll have to prioritize yearly vaccinations, make sure everyone keeps their hands washed, and boost your immune system by eating well, taking a good multivitamin, and getting enough sleep. In conclusion Just because you’ve wrapped up your career doesn’t mean that you have to be content without a paycheck. There are plenty of excellent job opportunities for retirees, and many of these offer flexible hours. More importantly, you have a chance to keep your mind and body busy and stave off the boredom that often comes with retirement.

Us vs. them - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Us vs. them - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Nature had researchers blind-test articles in Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica looking for errors. The result: The exercise revealed numerous errors in both encyclopaedias, but among 42 entries tested, the difference in accuracy was not particularly great: the average science entry in Wikipedia contained around four inaccuracies; Britannica, about three. Only eight serious errors, such as misinterpretations of important concepts, were detected in the pairs of articles reviewed, four from each encyclopaedia. But reviewers also found many factual errors, omissions or misleading statements: 162 and 123 in Wikipedia and Britannica, respectively. This might seem surprising, knowing that the brit is written and edited by experts while Wikipedia is written by, well, us. Theres been a lot of Wikipedia-related FUD in the media lately, especially over the Seigenthaler hoax. Heres my point of view: Hoaxes like that are going to happen. Changing Wikipedia to make this impossible would kill it. Its a trade-off: On the one hand Wikipedia adds new complexity at a fantastic rate precisely BECAUSE everyone can contribute. On the other hand this will lead to inacuracies, pranks, hoaxes and vandalism. However: Wikipedia has shown itself capable of dealing with most of this it has in effect developed a highly capable immune system. Thanks for visiting my blog. What Is A Curriculum Vitae

What Is A Curriculum Vitae The expression curriculum vitae originated from a Latin phrase meaning course of life. It can be described as a concise review of an individuals academic qualifications, professional experience, and skills and is usually attached to a job application when seeking a job. Whereas a curriculum vitae or CV is used particularly to apply for academic, educational, scientific, and research positions, or even for fellowships and grants in the United States, it is used to apply for all kinds of white collar jobs in other parts of the world. CVs can be anywhere from 3 to 20 pages and more (weve seen them all!) that describe you and your career. Especially in academia, a CV can actually be several pages long, since educators will list all of their published papers, any speaking engagements, workshops, professional development, volunteer info and more. Employers use CVs to screen candidates for personal interviews and to aid in the final employee selection. Therefore, it is important for a CV to be catchy, attractive and interesting. Good CV writing thus becomes an important part of finding a good job. In spite of CVs being so popular, there are a few organizations that prefer to have job seekers apply for a job using a format designed by the company itself. The reason is simple: these businesses rate job seekers based on their answers to a series of standardized questions. A custom format ensures that all candidates provide the desired information, as opposed to a CV, which is somewhat flexible and makes it more difficult to compare two individuals. Internationally a CV is actually what people in the United States refer to as the resume. CV writing could be divided into groups based on the purpose for which a CV is written. General or all-purpose CV writing is when a CV is written to suit all general purposes. Graduate CV writing is when a new graduate writes a CV for his/her first job. Various forms of CV writing can be difficult and has to be done skilfully. Good CV writing is not something everyone can do. As a result, a huge number of professional CV writing companies have cropped up in recent years, each promising a better CV than the other. You could approach a company in person in order to get your CV made, or you could simply hire a CV writer online, from the comfort of your home. The choice is yours. Each CV designing company makes different promises and claims. As always, to your homework and research any company you are interested in.

Job Hunting Lessons From the Bachelorette -

Job Hunting Lessons From the Bachelorette -If youre like me, you might have a weakness for drama-ridden reality television. While recently watching perennial favorite The Bachelorette, I was reminded that the Would you please accept this rose? format is anything but reality. I also realized that the process of looking for a job is notlage so different. Here are some similarities the two situations have in common. You have to date before you become engagedEvery season of the Bachelorette includes an overeager candidate who already wants to marry the Bachelorette before he even meets her. Just as you cant properly pick a fiance based on what you see on television, you cant truly tell whether an employer is a good fit just by looking at their Web site. Its logical to date someone for a while before you decide to marry them. Likewise, its good to interview with a company in person before you decide that you definitely want to work there.Theres always competitionMuch of the drama on the Ba chelorette develops throughout the season as the contestants develop romantic feelings for the woman, but then have to watch her dating numerous other people. Although you generally never know who youre competing against for a great job, much of the time youre competing against someone whos just as great as you are. Just like a Bachelorette contestant, you have to put your best foot forward throughout your job search, but also realize that a company might just feel a better connection with another candidate.Use your time wiselyAnother classic scenario on the Bachelorette is the eliminated contestant saying his final piece to the cameraShe and I could have had a wonderful thing, but she just didnt get to see the real me. Shy contestants often get eliminated quickly on the show because the Bachelorette gets a much better feeling for the mora outgoing guys around her. The same is true throughout your job hunt. Even if youre naturally reserved or shy, you have to push yourself to show y our true colors within a short period of time. An employer may review your resume for 30 seconds before moving on to the next one, or interview you for 30 minutes before meeting their next candidate. Companies make hiring decisions based on very limited contact with each candidateso make sure youre taking full advantage of every moment of their time that you getJessica Holbrook Hernandez is an expert resume writer, career and personal branding strategist, author, speaker and President/CEO of Great Resumes Fast. Dear Husband, Stop Asking Me to Remind You to Do Things

Dear Husband, Stop Asking Me to Remind You to Do Things I get it, honey. Being a working parent is hard. You know how I know? Because Im one too There is soooo much to remember (the train schedule, meeting times, deadlines), plus so much to do (washing the kids sheets, blankets and bottles for daycare, responding to birthday party invites, signing permission slips, helping ur preschooler with homework, buying food and feeding ur family, for starters). As wonderful as you are, many days, I feel like Im doing and remembering most things for our family.I love that you cook your own dinner and do your own laundry. Youre the epitome of a grown-ass man ... in most ways. But you do this weird thing You ask me to remember things for you. Its not that I dont want to help you. I do. And yes, between the two of us, I do have the better memory. The problem is I have no unused brain space. In fact, I prioritize all the info in my head so that when my brain gets full, as it does on a daily basis, low-priority stuff, such as when the next season ofThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is up on Amazon and when CVS coupons expire, disintegrate to make room for high-priority stuff, such as that I need to have given feedback on three feature stories before I sign off from work for the day and that our baby needs his liquid vitamin as soon as we all get home. Its exhausting, and sometimes impossible, to find an empty, properly prioritized mental filing cabinet for all that youd like me to remind you to do.Remind me to get a present for my sisters birthday. (I wound up taking care of it myself.)Remind me when I cant find my headphones tomorrow that theyre in my jacket pocket. (I didnt. You found them anyway. Gold star for you.)Remind me to register for open enrollment. (I didnt, but Im really glad you remembered so we can have another year with health insurance.)Babe, Im not aGoogle calendar. You know what is? A Google calendar. Do you know you can use it to set reminders? Of course you do Youv e actually asked me to put reminders in there for us. Im also not your administrative assistant.Im fully aware that youre more helpful to me than your father and grandfathers were to their wives. I appreciate that so much. But even though you might think were on equal footing at home and at work, were so not. If were ever to be, I have to do less for you so I may do more for me. And that doing includes remembering and reminding anything that requires thinking is a chore. I know you agree, otherwise you would remember your own damn things.--This article originally appeared in Working Mother.
